A Story Must be Built

How it all began!  In April of 2018 we formed Florence Building Company to change the world of new construction as well as remodeling for North Alabama.   Joe Quillen, Heather Davis, and Dr. Barry Basden are the members of our company.  We all met 10 years ago on our very first project we did together.   Our first building was so scary and so overwhelming that I am not sure any of us slept.   The first building that Dr. Basden and I built was Joe’s first ever commercial project yet we all believed in each other.  Everyone was nervous and we all realized right from the beginning that we all had something special.   Joe took an approach like no one had ever seen or heard of before.   He promised us that whatever we wanted he would find a way to make it happen.  It might not be easy and it might not be cheap but he would find a way to make our “Vision” come true.   Our “Vision” was pretty important since we were building Florence Eye Center at 711 Cox Creek Parkway.   This is where it all began and even though we weren’t IN business together we were doing business together.   To say our business just began this month is almost a lie because it began being formed so many years ago.  

Joe.  Joe has over 25 years in the construction business.  He is truly a hands on guy.  He has a hard time feeling like he has put in a good days work if he hasn’t put on a tool belt or swung a hammer.  He specializes in all aspects construction and pays close attention to all the details.  When subcontractors have an issue it is up to Joe to make sure it is resolved.  He is licensed in HVAC as well as Electrical.   Joe searches for tradesmen to do all of the work needed on your project knowing how he would want the work completed in his own home.   Joe will do whatever it takes to give you the best of himself and the best of the construction industry.   If you see Joe on a construction job you will know he is right at home and it will be rare to ever find him happy behind a desk all day.     Joe is a pretty humble guy but he has lots of design ideas and if you ask him and really listen he sometimes knows just the finishing touch that a project needs.  Joe has run so many construction projects he lost count long ago, but if you read below you can read about the ones that he loved the most.  

Heather.  Heather has over 15 years in management and a significant amount of that time was spent managing construction projects.   Heather has the task of finding the real estate and seeing the vision of what an empty lot or run down building could be.   She then takes that “Vision” and brings it to life.   If you ask her how she sees something turning out the way it does in the end she will tell you it is in all the details.   Heather has drawn and designed several projects over the years and while some of us walk through a building with her the first time we never see what she sees until those last few days when all the finishing touches come together.   Heather’s job at Florence Building Company will be complex.   She is responsible for the business management as well as any design skills needed by customers or the things we build for ourselves.   She is always looking to do something new or different so if you don’t want the same old cabinets that everyone else on your block has or the same house layout you may want to just mention that the first time you see her and you will get her attention.  

Dr. Basden.  We won’t say much about Doc because he wouldn’t want us to.  He has his own business and he will be there at the Eye Centers to keep you guys all seeing great so you can enjoy seeing the new projects that Joe and Heather build for you.  Doc is here to watch other people have the success in business that he has enjoyed and to be that support system that is always needed when you begin a new business.  He is a great guy and a wonderful mentor for both Heather and Joe.   He will as always keep doing what he loves and providing eye care for everyone in the Florence area. 

Joe and Heather were given the opportunity by Dr. Barry Basden to launch a new adventure in business that started being built so long ago.   To put it in construction terms, the foundation and frame work for this business were started 10 years ago when we first met and while our other construction projects go much faster this one took time.   Each project that we did completed another part of the structure that is this business.  So, in April of 2018 I can tell you the walls are up and the roof is on this  business and the doors are open and now it is time for the fun part, to enjoy what we have built this business to be and share it with North Alabama.
